How to Make Audio Files Louder in Windows

Low volume audio files can be close to useless. Whether it be an MP3 song that you are trying to listen to on your laptop, or a recorded audio file that isn’t quite loud enough, adjusting the volume on nearly any audio file can be made simple using a freeware audio editing application.

Got the volume up on your speakers and your audio playback software, but still need a bit more noise? Learn how to make audio files louder quickly and easily.

To get started with volume leveling and adjustment, you will first need to download a quality audio editor. One recommended choice is the freeware GoldWave program. Download link here.

After you have downloaded GoldWave, go ahead and install it onto your PC. You may need to restart your computer.

Navigate the path Start >  All Programs > GoldWave > GoldWave and launch the freshly installed software. If you have chosen to install a desktop shortcut, you can launch GoldWave by double clicking on the icon as well.

GoldWave Home Screen

With GoldWave open and ready to go, make sure that you have the audio file that you would like to adjust the volume on ready as well.

From the GoldWave home screen, click File > Open. Select your audio file and click the Open button. For this example, we will be editing a simple MP3 song. Once you click Open, your song should import into GoldWave.

Now that the audio file is ready for editing, you will need to adjust the volume. Find and locate the Change Volume button, which should be located on the top toolbar. Click once to open the volume editor.

Once the volume editor window opens, you will notice that the song is already on high. However, you can slide the DB (decibel) slider even further to the right, which will give you louder volume output. Alternatively, you can slide it to the left to reduce audio files that are too loud and distorted.

Once you have the volume at a suitable level, click the OK button to resample.  Note that you can preview the song using the Play and Stop button within the Change Volume window.

Once you are finished save changes to the song. That’s all there is to it. You should now have successfully adjusted the volume for an audio file. Now that you’ve done that, why not try out some other features that GoldWave offers. You can slow songs, speed up songs, and even mix.
