Making your resume stand out in a large pile of other resumes is a challenge facing all job seekers, especially in a weakened economy. Depending on the job for which you are applying, a creative and visually appealing resume can mean the difference between being called for an interview and not.
Many apps for creating resumes that stand out in a crowd are appearing on the Web. One of the easiest-to-use apps is Resumesimo.
Click Get Started to start building your resume.
Resumesimo then displays a colorful array of templates. These are not your standard resume layouts found in Word or even on LinkedIn’s automatic resume maker. These templates are visually expressive. Some are more formal than others, so choose wisely for your industry. Click the template of your choice.
Click Choose this template on the top right of the next screen.
You can now start entering information into your resume. The fastest way to do this is to link to your Facebook or LinkedIn account using the buttons at the top right of the screen. This will automatically import your personal information, jobs and educations into the fields of Resumesimo’s entry forms.
Start by entering your name and address in any of the fields that are blank on the first form. Click Next Step when finished.
If you imported information from your LinkedIn or Facebook accounts, your work history will appear at the top of the screen. You can either edit it, add to it or click Next step.
Your education information will appear on the next screen. Edit it, then click Next Step.
The next screen asks you to list awards. These are not entered automatically, so enter information about your awards, then click Save and add after each one. Click Next Step when finished.
We had the most fun with the next screen, which allows you to enter your skills and languages. Any language will do—even Klingon. Be sure to save after you add each skill or language, then click Next Step to finish.
The next screen is the last of the information entry screens. Here, you can upload a photo and enter any other information you think is important. Uploading a photo is optional, and career gurus differ in their opinions of whether or not it is wise.
Resumesimo then compiles your resume.
The final screen allows you complete control of your resume. From here you can download the resume as a PDF, edit it, change your template or download your information in standard resume format. You can also choose whether to make your resume public or private. If you want to share your resume as a URL, you can copy the URL from the Your Online Resume link.
Resumesimo’s templates are very different than the ones found in our favorite word processors, but they do not offer the level of customizability that word processing templates offer
